Sticky Rice Triangle with Peanuts (ZongZi | 粽子) | Food of Taiwan

This YouTube episode is very special as my mom is making a special appearance and talks about what she knows about the food too! Breakfasts in Taiwan can be almost anything. Sticky rice triangles are sticky rice (aka glutinous rice or sweet rice) wrapped in leaves- often times bamboo leaves but sometimes it can be galangal leaves too. Rice triangles or Zongzi are often eaten during the dragon boat festival but we love them so much you can find them throughout the whole year.

Perfectly soft rice and super flavorful peanuts, I genuinely loved this rice triangle more than I thought I would. Glad I woke up at 6am for it, walking through the alleys of Tainan when it was quiet was a really nice experience as well.

I loved the location of this “restaurant”, it’s in front of a temple under a big tree. They’re open early in the morning and gave a very different and intimate look into how peaceful the bustling city and alleys could be. I love the contrast and watching regulars quietly stopping at the stall and getting their breakfast.

In Taiwan, we love eating soup with our meals. This little place serves miso soup with the zongzi, but it was a version I’ve never had before. It was a lot sweeter than what I was used to and they added “Youtiao”, a type of fried dough to the soup, I’d never had it this way before.
