Us Asians love our rice, we even invented a special cooker in the name of it. But what’s so special about a rice cooker?
In Taiwan, we make up thousands of yummy recipes to cook in it. Anything a slow-cooker can do we can top it. AND IT COMES IN PINK!!!
Our rice cooker design is simple, there is only one button. Push it down then the heater starts heating up. A spring pushes a thermostat underneath the pot against the bottom of the bowl for good thermal contact. During cooking the rice/water mixture is heated at full power. The water reaches a temperature of 100 °C (212 °F); it cannot get hotter than itsboiling point.By the end of cooking there will be no free water left; most will have been absorbed by the rice, and some boiled off. As heating continues, the temperature can now rise above boiling point; this makes the thermostat trip. Some cookers then switch to low-power warming mode.
Here are a few examples of what I’ve made with my rice cooker: steamed fish, curry, buns, dumplings, chicken soup, re-fried beans, salsa, mac n cheese, meatloaf, even lasagna and sponge cake! The sky is the limit when it comes to what a rice cooker can do.I have read about people using it to stir-fry and deep fry, which sounds amazingly convenient!
Another thing I love to do with my rice cooker is to prepare multiple dishes at once. I would prepare a few little bowls and put various ingredients in each bowl to make up a meal.
For example, all the ingredients for veggie curry in one bowl, whisked up egg in another to make steamed egg then rice and water in the last one to make rice, with one click and after a relaxing shower I get a feast to enjoy.
