Rice Cake in a Bowl (uánn-kué)碗粿 | Food of Taiwan

On the most famous food street of Tainan, Taiwan lies an un assuming little shop that sells delicious savory rice cake in a bowl called “uánn-kué”, pronounced like “Wa-Guei”, 碗粿。 This kind of rice cake is a snack I grew up eating, one of my favorite after school snacks, but I’ve never had a version from Tainan.

Watch the giant steamer steam thousands of rice cake in a bowl to keep up with the demand. A dab of wasabi, and a spoonful of ground garlic adds so much to the rice cake and eating the dish with a bamboo stick adds to the fun of the dish. Join me on this episode as we explore the street food of Tainan!
